Doing it for Free (Almost)

When I decided  to start up this site it was my intention to show that making or saving money on the net is really within everyone’s grasp.

Given the above statement this site will focus on my experiences using Wordpress as the platform for generating revenue and keeping the costs to an absolute minimum.

At present (May 2009) the current economic crisis means that unemployment is rising and the need to watch our individual finances is essential.

That being said for those people that have been made redundant it may be worth looking into setting aside £60-£100 to get your self a web presence. If nothing else it will give you something rewarding to focus on and may just help with the finances a little.

You are also going to need some software to download and upload files for your site. This is were FileZilla comes in .

To quote the FileZilla blurb

Publishing Software

You are also going to need some software to build your site and a way of uploading any files to the  server that is hosting your site.

Depending on what your aims are there are a number of options from the FREE to having a site built for you commercially were the only restriction is how much money you have to invest.

Again you can search google for something like ‘Website software’

Custom Search

and you will see that there are thousands of options. If like me , when I first got into website creation , you are looking for a cheap and easy to use start up solution then you will be pleased to know that there is a fantastic FREE product available.

The software I use is Wordpress which covers not only the ease of use but also the fact that its FREE .The other benefit offered by Wordpress is that it has a massive user base with a community that helps and supports through the Wordpress forum.

There are also hundreds of add-ons available FREE for Wordpress that make it easy to customise the look and functionality of your site.

I have used Wordpress for a number of years and it is ideal for someone like me who is not a expert at any sort of coding.

Domain Name

The Domain Name is your unique address to your site. For instance the domain name for this site is Blog2Earn.com.Now this is a really basic way of explaining what a Domain Name is but for the purpose of getting you up and running it will suffice.

Whats in a Name

Your site name can be anything as long as it is unique either by its name or by its extension for instance Blog2earn.com is different then Blog2Earn.co.uk.

Now there is alot written about Domain Names ,what to use etc.For me I do not really worry about it as I hope the content of my sites will bring visitors

So have a think about what name you will call your site and then check to see if it is available on one of the many hosting sites.

Hosting

The first thing to decide is where your website is going to reside. For this you will need to purchase a hosting plan from one of the many hosting companies.

Now which hosting company you use is entirely up to you but you need to consider what publishing software you will be using as this will dictate the minimum requirements.

For instance if you use Wordpress as your website platform the following are the minimum requirements:

  • PHP 4.3 or greater
  • MySQL 4.0 or greater
  • The mod_rewrite Apache module
  • I have put a few links in the sidebar under hosting which may point you in the right direction or you can search Google using the search term Website Hosting.

    Building a Website

I pointed out in a earlier post what the requirements are to get a site up and running. The posts in the category ‘The Practical Bits’ will look into each of these items in a little bit more detail.

I will cover off  three of the four main requirements these being

    1. Hosting your Site
    2. Domain Name
    3. Publishing Software

The last one Time is entirely up to you, remember the more time you invest the quicker your site will be up and running and your chances of generating revenue will be available sooner

    Whats the Cost

As with all things in life there is very little that is truly free what may surprise you is how little the costs are to set up a site like this for instance. What you have to consider is what you are trying to achieve this in turn will allow you to make the decision on how much you wish to invest.

You could also look at in another way by deciding that you have x amount to spend and then looking for what you can get for your money.

Either way there are four things that you are going to need if you want your own site.

    1. Somewhere to Host your site
    2. A Domain Name
    3. Publishing Software
    4. Time

Looking at the above list you will be parting with money for items 1 and 2 ,item 3 you can get for nothing the final one Time is relative to what you are trying to achieve. If you treat the setting up of your site as a hobby then your time should be classed as leisure and in my view has no cost on the other hand if you are trying to make a living from your site then time is in my opinion the most expensive cost.

You also need to know that for your hosting and domain name that these are recurring costs ,generally yearly depending on what you actually commit to.

So you may be wondering now what the actual costs are lets take this site for instance the annual costs are (as of 2009) £56.60GBP per year which allows me to run this site for every second of the day all year round. So for £1.10 per week I have the potential to reach millions of people.Though to be honest there would be extra costs if this site became so popular that it exceeded the bandwidth allocation that is included in the hosting package. What I could also do if I purchased further Domain Names is host them with the same company as the package allows me to host 5 distinct sites.

So for less then £60 you can set up your own website and give yourself a world wide presence.

    What next?

    Why Bother to Blog

Its simple really ‘Someone,Somewhere might be interested in what you have to say’ .

The Blogging phenomenon as given us all the opportunity to share our knowledge, life experiences and views with the whole world. No longer are we limited to a circle of family and friends to air our views.

This is the power of the web the ability to share on a global scale.Take this site for instance its a hobby in reality but if through doing something I enjoy it also helps other people then what a bonus.

Add to this the ability of this site to supply information that may help me earn a little well it ticks all the positive box’s for me.

You may now be considering that having your own site is a good idea and are wondering where to start.Number one its really not that difficult to set up a site like this.Number two add to this that the costs involved are easily within the reach of the average person.

So where do you start, its not my intention to try and teach in any great detail the mechanics of setting up a site. There is a plethora of  information freely available by far more skilled people then me just search the web.

Fact or Fiction (The Fiction Bit)

OK so here’s the FICTION bit.

For me there are some really fundemental untruths told about creating websites that can generate money. The first of these is the claim you can make £500 in 15 minutes if you buy this or that for $99 and other such nonsense. This has to be FICTION given that if  it was possible we would all be very rich and if these type of products were that effective one of the major retailers such as Tesco or Walmart would be selling it cheaper.

The next bit of FICTION is the need to buy this or that to get visitors to your site .You can search the net and discover all you need to know without resorting to ‘Get Googled’ type products that make wild claims about your sites potential page ranking. Here try for your self looking up some of your own money making terms.

If you checked any of these sites out I am sure that some will be interesting and some will appear some what dodgy.

I have spent over the last couple of years about £300 on various products and only 2 of these in any way lived up to the sales pitch the rest were absolute rubbish.

I could fill a whole series of posts about products that I consider to be nothing short of criminal (perhaps I will in the future) remember ‘If it sounds to good to be true…’

Fact or Fiction (The Fact Bit)

OK so you are thinking that you can earn loads of money by setting up your own web site.

Well maybe .Then again maybe not.

Consider the facts there are millions of websites from really sophisticated to absolute basic. They cover topics from Acne to Zebra’s and each of these topics could result in thousands if not millions of sites.

Don’t believe me try this Google search box take a look around one of the sites that are returned.

You might want to try the phrase ‘make a million’ or maybe ‘left handed fish’.

So did you try the two phrases above? . If you did the first phrase probably did not surprise you when it returned millions of results, the number of results the second phrase returned may be a little more surprising.

The FACT is that what you consider to be a absolute unique idea may already have a huge presence on the net .The FACT is that even if it does not Google may still return thousands of results that are sort of related to what the user was searching for.

The FACT is your website is going to be one of potentially millions that is vying to get noticed everytime that people search the web regardless if they use Google ,Yahoo or some other search tool.

If you have found that there is not much competition for what you have in mind well done otherwise I hate to say it but I told you so.

After reading the above you may think that making money on the web is impossible the FACT is that you can its really were you set your expectations on what your returns are going to be.

Always remember ‘If it sounds to good to be true….’

Ok thats some of the FACT bits out of the way now onto the Fiction .
